Veneers can drastically improve the appearance of your teeth. Whether you're concerned about discolored teeth or gaps or chips, dental veneersveneers are a great option. Dentists Anthony Marengo, Jr., D.D.S, Jacob Sylvester, D.D.S. and Debby Patel, D.D.S., offer veneers to Olathe residents and share a few of the most commonly asked questions.

What is a veneer?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that are permanently attached to your teeth. Unlike crowns, veneers only cover the front portion of your teeth. Custom-made veneers not only hide dental issues; they also make your smile lighter and brighter.

How can dental veneers improve my smile?

Dental veneers are appropriate if you want to cover dull or yellow teeth. Although teeth whitening can lighten your teeth by as many as eight shades, sometimes whitening alone isn't enough to achieve the desired look. Veneers can be a good option if your teeth are discolored from large fillings or you have tetracycline stains. You may also be a good candidate for veneers if you have gaps between your teeth or they're worn down, irregularly shaped, crooked or uneven.

What's involved in the veneer process?

Your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to ensure that your bite isn't affected after you receive the veneers. He or she will make an impression of your teeth, which a lab will use as mold to create the veneers. Veneers are usually ready one to two weeks after the lab receives the impression. Before your dentist permanently bonds the veneers to your teeth, he'll check the fit and color.

How should I care for my new veneers?

Because veneers are permanently attached to your teeth, they don't require much in the way of special care. You can floss and brush as usual, although it's important to use non-abrasive toothpaste to prevent scratches on the surface of the veneers. Using your teeth as a tool to open packages isn't recommended, as this can damage the veneers. Biting extremely hard foods should also be avoided. If your dentist notices that you grind your teeth, he or she may recommend that you wear a nightguard to prevent chipping or breaking.

VeneersAre you looking for a long-lasting and reliable way to give your smile the bright, healthy look you have always wanted? Then, dental veneers may be right for you. In a pain-free and simple process, your highly trained cosmetic dentist can transform stained, crooked, poorly shaped or chipped teeth into a look you can be proud of.

What Are Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are small, tooth-shaped laminates which cover the front surface of existing teeth. Strong and natural-looking, veneers are custom-fabricated to correct minor misalignments, teeth that are uneven in length or are discolored due to age, smoking or strongly colored foods or beverages such as coffee. While not appropriate for serious orthodontic issues or for unhealthy teeth, veneers can make a remarkable change in a smile that just needs a little help.

What Is the Veneer Process Like?

As with any dental procedure, you and your dentist will decide if veneers are the right option. It is important to realize that the veneer procedure is permanent and cannot be reversed.

The dentist will examine your teeth, ask what you wish to achieve and if appropriate, begin the veneer procedure. While some kinds of veneers need little or no preparation of the teeth, most porcelain laminates require the doctor to remove 1/2 millimeter of enamel from the front surface of the teeth. He then takes impressions of the teeth and sends them to a dental lab. At the lab, a highly skilled technician creates the porcelain veneers. This process may take a week or more.

At the next dental visit, the dentist securely glues the veneers to the patient's teeth. The adhesive is treated with a special light which speeds up the hardening process. The doctor checks the veneers for fit and color. The entire procedure is straightforward and usually requires no anesthesia.

How Should You Care For Your Veneers?

The simple answer is: care for your veneers in the same way that you care for your natural teeth. Brush your teeth 2 times per day, and floss them at least once daily. Report any gum irritation to your dentist, and be sure to continue with routine examinations and cleanings with your hygienist.

In a week or two after your veneers have been placed, follow-up with your dentist so he can check the placement of the laminates, your bite and the condition of your gums. Some people experience minor tooth sensitivity with their new veneers, but this subsides relatively quickly.
