At Esthetic Enhancement in Olathe, KS, your dentists - Dr. Anthony Marengo, Jr., Dr. Jacob Sylvester, and Dr. Matthew Kolarik - love seeing healthy, bright smiles. The doctors teach their patients that good oral hygiene habits support outstanding dental health, fewer restorative procedures, and a great sense of well-being. Here are some tips on at-home hygiene. Try to incorporate them into your daily routine.
Brushing twice a day
That's a rule established by the American Dental Association (ADA). Brushing with a soft toothbrush which fits comfortably inside your mouth removes plaque from tooth surfaces and the gumline, promoting a cavity-free smile with healthy gum tissue. When you brush, be sure to stay at it for a full two minutes (set the timer on your phone if necessary). Place the brush at a 45-degree angle to your teeth and use a gentle, sweeping motion to cleanse front, back, and chewing surfaces.
Flossing once a day
The ADA recommends this, too. Both you and your dentist can tell if you neglect flossing, as the red, sore, bleeding gums which indicate gingivitis (an early stage of dangerous gum disease) appear.
So, to prevent gum disease, take a couple of minutes each day to wind a single strand of dental floss around your index fingers and clean between your teeth. Or, if you prefer, use a Y-shaped flosser, small interproximal brush, or WaterPik. You'll remove a lot of plaque and debris, leaving your teeth and gums cleaner and protected against cavities and gum issues.
Eat tooth-friendly foods
Reduce sugar and carbohydrate intake as much as possible. Eat plenty of:
- Calcium-rich dairy products
- Low-fat proteins
- Whole grains
Drink water instead of soda pop, sports drinks, and staining beverages such as coffee and tea.
Think about your oral health. Avoid smoking and chewing tobacco. Both contribute to gum disease and oral cancer.
Take a toothbrush and floss with you to work or school. Use a fluoride mouth rinse to strengthen tooth enamel. And, of course, see the friendly team at Esthetic Enhancement in Olathe every six months.
Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, checking for decay, gum disease, oral cancer, TMJ, and more. Your hygienist will scale your teeth to remove any plaque and tartar you miss when brushing and flossing at home. You'll love how your teeth look and feel!
Check your habits
At your next routine check-up, ask your hygienist how you're doing and if she can suggest ways to improve. Using an electric toothbrush, special floss for cleaning around implants, bridges, and crowns and other tools and products can give you the clean you need for a long-lasting smile.
